Winterizing Your Beehives: Essential Tips for South Carolina Beekeepers

As the temperatures start to drop, the number one concern for us South Carolina beekeepers is ensuring our bees have enough food to make it through the winter. Checking the hives on sunny days provides an excellent opportunity to assess their food reserves. If you find they're running low, emergency feeding can be a lifesaver, helping to keep them strong through the winter months.

Next on our list of priorities is Varroa mite control. Certain times of the year, such as winter, are great for treating bees with oxalic acid. As our bees start to wind down their brood production, it's crucial to keep these pests in check.

If you come across a queenless hive, consider merging it with a queen-right colony. This can help bolster the strength of your hives and improve their chances of surviving the winter.

Lastly, location is key. Ensure your hives are in a sunny spot to maximize warmth, and close off any unnecessary entrances to help retain heat.
